The Ring Video Doorbell Pro

I have an eBay business and also sell on Amazon, so I get a lot of deliveries to my house. Sean and I also get couriers collecting items from us on most days. We both work in separate parts of the house (usually with music or YouTube on) and don’t always hear the doorbell.

I was interested in the chance to try out the Ring Video Doorbell Pro because it sounded like something that would be useful for us. We are not particularly concerned about security in our street, but the fact that we could monitor our driveway and doorway with this was an added bonus.

What Is The Ring Video Doorbell Pro?

It’s a doorbell combined with an HD camera, motion sensor, and two-way voice facility. There’s a lot you can do with it.

Once the doorbell is installed, you connect to it via a free app on your phone, tablet or PC. It works with Android, iOS and Windows 10. You then get a notification on your phone whenever someone rings the doorbell. You can see whoever is at the door via the app, and talk to them. They can also talk back to you.

The amazing thing is that this works wherever you are. So, if you’re out at the shops, in the back garden or on holiday somewhere, you can talk to whoever is at your door. You can also see them via the 1080p HD camera.

In addition to this, you can connect to your doorbell at any time to look through the camera. There’s the facility to record what’s going on from the app The camera has night vision too so you can monitor the front door twenty four hours a day if you want to.

You can also enable motion detection to get notifications when there’s movement outside. You can adjust the sensitivity of the motion detection facility.

How To Install It

A qualified electrician is required to install it, because it is connected to the mains electricity. I’m told that it’s a relatively easy installation, however. It comes with everything that you need to fix it to the wall and wire it in.

It can be fixed to any surface.

A nice aspect is that it comes with four faceplates so you can change the colour to match with the rest of your door’s furniture. It looks very modern, with LED lighting.

My Verdict

I’ve never met such a sophisticated piece of equipment that actually looks so good, is discreet, and is easy to operate.

It was very easy to set up once wired in. We’ve not had any issues with losing connection.

It’s been really handy to be able to see who’s at the door from wherever we are. Because I keep my phone right next to me when I’m working, I always know when someone is at the door as I get a notification from the app. We’ve spoken to visitors and delivery drivers from our local shop, as well as when we’ve been out on a walk. It’s going to be interesting to see how well it works when we’re in France in a few days.

This is a screenshot from the app on my phone, when I got Sean to be a guinea pig and go and ring the doorbell. I have blurred the background on this image (just so all the cars etc are out of focus) but you can get the idea. It’s a fisheye style lens, and the camera is 1080p HD so it’s very good quality.

I haven’t needed to set up notifications on my computer yet, but might do that in future.

One thing that’s a nice little touch is that you can change the ringtone. When we were playing with it earlier, we noticed some new ringtones on the app that must have been added for Halloween. Think spooky laughter and screeching cats.

We do need to work out how to adjust is the volume of the two-way talk facility. Currently, half of the village must be able to hear what we’re saying to people at our front door as the speaker is just so loud!

It’s really quite a unique piece of kit that’s accessible to anyone wanting a more secure monitor for their front door. You don’t need large obnoxious cameras installed, and can just operate it from your phone.

Who This Would Be Good For

  • The security-conscious who need their monitor your front door area. You can connect to the camera from anywhere, talk to whoever is standing there, and record what’s going on. You can also set up motion detection.
  • People who don’t usually hear their doorbell ringing, and want to be notified whenever someone is at the door.
  • Those who want to speak to visitors, delivery drivers, the postman, milkman etc. Or anyone else who might need directions or instructions.

This sounds fantastic, we have just moved home so this would be ideal for us, I’m always ordering online and have missed two parcels due to sorting our seven month old daughter out and not hearing the door, so a notification when someone knocks would be perfect xx

This sounds good, we have problems with not hearing the door knock so if we’re expecting a delivering we don’t have music on and try and keep a listen out. I like this although it is quite expensive so maybe I’ll put in my Christmas list and perhaps santa will get me one
