Bedside table decor is a little bit awkward to get right. You want to keep things by your bed that you actually need and use, but also want it to look pretty and uncluttered. Being quite a messy person naturally, I gravitate towards keeping a lot of things on my bedside table. I tried recently to pare it down to the essentials. Stylish accessories that also have a purpose have proven to be the key to a clutter-free look. I also added some pieces to help create the warm and cosy feel that I like in my bedroom, especially at this time of year.
Here’s what I’m keeping on my bedside table this autumn and winter.
Some Good Books
Not long ago I had a stack of around ten books on my bedside table, which got a bit overwhelming. Usually I’ll have two or three books on the go at once, mainly because I’m indecisive and change my mind a lot about what I want to be reading.
I recently won these three books in a competition and decided to put them at the top of my reading list. I tend to read thrillers and horror books most of the time, but decided to switch it up a bit with these. Pieces Of Happiness is about a woman who invites four old school friends to live with her on a cocoa plantation in the South Pacific. Their lives have gone awry for various reasons, and it’s about starting again. Calling Major Tom is about ‘friendship, family and forgiveness’ and is touted as an uplifting and heartwarming read.
Goodbye, Vitamin is the one I’m reading first. Its main character is a thirty something woman who moves back home to help her mother look after her father, who’s in the first stages of dementia. It’s written like a diary, and covers a year in their lives as they adapt to the changes his illness brings. Funny and sad at the same time, I’m enjoying this variation from my norm.
A Trinket Tray
A few weeks ago I wrote a post showing how I store my jewellery. Having a system like that has helped me become more organised when getting ready, and keeps everything in its place. When I get into bed, I take off the day’s jewellery and put it in this pretty gold pineapple trinket tray from Dunelm.
Usually at night I’m pretty tired by the time I get into bed, and it’s nice not to have to put everything back in its rightful place when all I want to do is go to sleep. A trinket tray is so handy for keeping watches and jewellery neat. It’s easy to put it all back on the next day, or I can put it away when I’m getting ready and pick something else out.
Lip Balm & Hand Cream
I used to have half the contents of my bathroom cupboards on my bedside table. This took up so much space, so now I keep everything on my dressing table apart from a hand cream and lip balm. These are the last stages of my night time beauty routine and these two products in particular are great to use at night.
The Burts Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream is extremely thick and moisturising, so I only use it at night. The NIOD Lip Bio-Lipid Concentrate is an oil, which hydrates as well as plumps (apparently…I’ve just started testing it out). It causes a bit of redness so I only put this on at night too.
A Notebook, Pen & Something I’m Working On
A notebook and pen are essential for me as a blogger, and I have them everywhere. I am a person who has to write everything down, or else I forget. When an idea for a post or the thought of something I really need to do pops into my head, I write it down quickly.
I’m also doing a little bit of work in the evenings to develop my creative writing skills. I used to write stories all the time, but real life sometimes gets in the way of imagination. My dream is to write a book one day, and I have a lot of separate ideas, but am struggling to get them into a coherent narrative. As well as some writing exercises I’m doing every day, I’m also reading How To Make A Living With Your Writing by Joanna Penn.
It covers lots of different ideas on how you can work as a writer, including as a blogger, freelancer and novelist. Joanna also tackles publication options and advertising. It has great reviews on Amazon so I look forward to getting stuck in each day.
A Cosy Cushion
OK, this is not strictly on my bedside table. But with all this reading I’m doing lately, I need something comfy to lean against. I am in love with this huge, squidgy grey cushion from Dunelm.
It’s the Large Grey Blanket Stitch Cushion from Jan Constantine’s range at Dunelm. It’s 55cm x 55cm and is the perfect size for snuggling up against. This bedding is also from Dunelm and the cushion matches perfectly.
Of course, most people have a bedside lamp. I have this quartz effect lamp base from Laura Ashley, and the linen lampshade is from a shop local to me in Monmouth called Biggie Best.
I like both of these, but they’re not permanent in this bedroom (and neither is the Trysil bedside table from IKEA). We’re still looking for bedside tables to match my dressing table which is in the opposite corner of this room. Ideally we’ll have large mirrored bedside tables and larger lamps. The headboard of our bed is so big that it swallows the lamps up, so I think I need to go bigger and bolder. This area is still a work in progress!
What’s better than candlelight to create a cosy atmosphere? My candle obsession continues, and this Multi-Wick Peace Candle is gorgeous.
It’s also from the Jan Constantine range at Dunelm. It’s the perfect relaxing scent comprising fresh mint and eucalyptus, soft lavender, geranium and rose, and a base of cedarwood and musk. This candle is great for clearing the head after a hectic day.
I love this little corner of my house. I’ve managed to keep it uncluttered, and it’s the ideal place for me to retreat to after a long day.
I’m so pleased to be offering one of my readers the chance to win three items shown in this post from Dunelm.
You could win a Jan Constantine Large Grey Blanket Stitch Cushion (RRP £25), a Jan Constantine Multi-Wick Peace Candle (RRP £12, and it comes in a beautiful gift box) and a Deco Charm Pineapple Trinket Tray (RRP £6).
Entries are via the Gleam app below. The giveaway is open to UK entrants only, and runs until midnight on Sunday 3 December 2017.
