5 Makeup Product Basics for Beginners

Following makeup inspiration pages and beauty gurus on social media and TV is sure to make you itch to try your hand at some of the beautiful looks you see on your feed. However, most of what you see can be complicated and uses loads of different products that aren’t ideal for someone just starting out.

Before you can start recreating some of the mind-blowing and creative looks you see on TV like Emily in Paris makeup, it’s a good idea to start with the basics and perfect some simple techniques.

For this, there are only a few simple products you’ll need. Here are the most important ones to invest in when you’re looking to improve your makeup skills.

Good Makeup Brushes

The brushes you use play a huge role in how your finished look turns out. High-quality brushes do a better job of transferring and blending products than cheaply made versions. This is one area to splash the cash and ensure you’re buying a good brand of brushes.

To start off with, you’ll only need a few items like a beauty blender, a soft and high-quality powder brush, an eyeshadow brush and a tool for brushing out your eyebrows.

Foundation that Fits

We all have different skin types and tones, so picking the right foundation can be tricky, but this can make or break your look, particularly when you’re learning how to be pretty. Buying a foundation that is too dark or too light for your skin can make it look like you’re wearing a mask.

A foundation that’s too thick or too oily could also feel uncomfortable and work against you when layering on other products. Find a foundation that feels silky on your skin, blends well and offers the right amount of coverage for you.

Nude Eyeshadow Palette

Most of the fun in makeup lies in the wonderful artistry of eyeshadow. Before you start experimenting with crazy colours and bold looks, practice techniques like proper blending with a simple, nude eyeshadow palette.

Keeping things plain and basic will allow you to practice your skills without creating too much of a mess in the instance that you do make a mistake. You can perfect everyday natural looks and a sultry smoky eye that looks good on everyone and will teach you the art of blending.

Liquid Liner

Liquid eyeliner might be intimidating, but once you’ve mastered the liquid liner technique it’s one of the quickest ways to level up any makeup look. A good quality liner with the perfect brush will make it easy for you to perfect those fine lines on your lids.

Black eyeliner is a classic staple, but colourful and even glittery eyeliners can add a burst of fun to a simple and natural eyeshadow style.

Finishing Spray

You might also want to focus on ways to make your makeup last longer. Ensuring that all your hard work doesn’t go to waste is important, especially on hot days when sweat has your makeup running by 10 AM.

A primer is a good idea, but for a beginner, simply investing in a good finishing spray can help you extend the lifespan of your look by a few hours.
