How to stay sane when travelling with friends

Last updated: April 14, 2026

Travelling with friends can be an exhilarating experience, full of laughter, shared memories and countless adventures. But, as with any group activity, it can sometimes feel like you’re stepping on each other’s toes or constantly battling for control of the itinerary.

To make sure that your travels remain enjoyable and stress-free, consider the dynamics of group travel and plan accordingly. Here’s how you can stay sane and make the most of your time together.

Set expectations before you go

Before embarking on the trip, take the time to have a frank conversation with your friends. Discuss what each of you expects from the experience. Are you looking to relax, or do you want to explore every museum and attraction in sight?

If you and your friends have varying interests or energy levels, openly discuss these differences. For example, some may prefer leisurely days at the beach while others might opt for hiking or city tours. Agree on a general plan that allows everyone to get the most out of the trip without feeling frustrated.

Build in designated quiet time

It’s easy to overlook, but ensuring everyone has a bit of solitude can be a game-changer when it comes to staying calm and collected.

Designated quiet time is essential for maintaining personal space and recharging your batteries. This could be something as simple as allowing an hour each day for each person to have their own space.

You should also set time aside so each person can indulge in their own hobbies or activities, such as playing online slots, breaking off to read, or engaging in other personal interests.

Giving yourself space to unwind in this way can help ensure that when you reconvene, everyone feels refreshed and more present in the group.

Rotate responsibilities

Planning a trip with friends means sharing the load. The key here is to rotate responsibilities – whether it’s booking accommodations, deciding on where to eat, or navigating the public transport system.

Spreading the responsibilities evenly means no one person feels overwhelmed, and it reduces the potential for resentment to build up.

Give everyone a chance to contribute to the planning process and allow each person to take charge at different points throughout the trip. It creates a sense of collective involvement and ensures that people feel heard and valued.

Don’t be afraid to split up

While group travel can be fantastic, sometimes it’s better to separate for a while. If everyone wants to do something different, don’t feel guilty about splitting up for a few hours.

Whether it’s one person visiting a museum and another going shopping, or someone taking a nap while the others explore, it can provide much-needed breathing room.

Not every moment needs to be spent together to make the trip enjoyable. Give each other the freedom to do what feels right at the time and then reconvene later to share stories.

Laugh off the small stuff

No matter how carefully you plan, things will inevitably go wrong. The bus may be late, someone might lose their luggage, or a much-anticipated activity could be closed for the day.

Instead of getting upset, try to embrace the chaos. Laugh at the small annoyances and keep the mood light. The ability to let go of minor setbacks will make the whole trip feel less stressful.

After all, it’s often these unplanned moments that turn into the funniest stories and cherished memories in the end.
