In 2024, 52% of engagement rings sold in the United States held a lab-grown center stone. In 2019 the figure was 12%. A survey of roughly 17,000 couples married last year put the number past half. For most buyers the synthetic stone is now the default, and that kind of move in five years does not stay contained to engagement rings. It is already pulling the rest of fashion jewelry behind it.

The Adoption Curve
The growth is steep and recent. Lab-grown stones made up 12% of engagement rings in 2019, reached 46% in 2023, and passed 52% in 2024. Across the wider jewelry market the share is smaller, near 14% in 2024, because earrings and pendants turn over more slowly than engagement rings. Forecasters expect lab-grown stones to reach roughly a third of the global diamond market by 2030. A change this fast and this complete has already passed the test of a fad.
The category has won its core argument with buyers, faster than almost anyone in the trade predicted. The acceleration came from supply. Indian cutting houses expanded lab-grown output more than threefold in a few years, and large retailers added lab-grown lines once the margins worked. With the stones on every counter, the old stigma faded quickly.
A Widening Price Gap
Price drove the change. A 1-carat lab-grown stone averaged about $3,410 in early 2020 and around $892 by late 2024, a drop near 74% as production capacity expanded. A comparable natural stone still cost close to $5,000 at the end of 2024. The gap is now wide enough that a lab-grown stone of the same size costs 80% to 85% less than its mined counterpart.
Buyers have responded by going larger. The average lab-grown center stone reached about 2.0 carats in 2024, against 1.6 for natural stones. The same budget simply buys a bigger stone, and for many people the size on the hand outweighs the origin of the carbon. A shopper with a $3,000 budget who once would have settled for a smaller mined stone can now buy a two-carat lab-grown stone and keep money in pocket. That math is hard to argue with standing at the counter.
Lab Grown in Everyday Fashion Jewelry
The price collapse changed what a diamond is for. A stone that once meant a single milestone purchase now turns up in studs, pendants, and stackable bands meant for daily wear. Lab grown engagement rings are one end of that range, and a pair of two-carat studs nobody would have risked at natural prices is the other.
The effect is a looser attitude toward diamonds. They have moved from a once-in-a-lifetime symbol toward a material a person can actually wear without ceremony.
The Stone Itself
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond by every physical measure. It has the same carbon structure and hardness as a mined stone, returns light the same way, and is graded on the same four measures of cut, color, clarity, and carat. A trained grader cannot tell the two apart by eye. Separating them takes specialized equipment that reads the tiny growth patterns left by each process. For a buyer, this means the choice is about origin and price, with quality held constant.
That is a different decision from the one shoppers faced when the alternative to a real diamond was glass or cubic zirconia. Independent labs certify lab-grown stones the same way they certify mined ones, with a printed report on the same four measures. The paperwork looks identical because the product, for practical purposes, is.
Sustainability and Its Limits
Ethics drives a real part of the demand. A 2023 Deloitte survey found 62% of Gen Z luxury buyers treat ethical sourcing and sustainability as essential to a purchase, and lab-grown stones avoid the mining questions that follow natural diamonds. For many buyers the choice is one piece of a wider turn toward ethical consumerism.
The fuller picture is more mixed. Growing a diamond takes large amounts of energy, and a stone grown on a coal-heavy grid has its own carbon footprint. Lab-grown is not automatically green. The process removes one set of problems and depends heavily on how and where the stone was made. Buyers who care should ask about the energy source and what kind of grid powers the production. The label alone does not settle the question, and some growers lean on it harder than the facts support.
Beyond the Engagement Ring
The lab-grown effect is most visible away from engagement rings. Cheaper stones make diamond fashion jewelry possible at prices that used to buy cubic zirconia. Tennis necklaces, hoop earrings, and stacked eternity bands are all easier to justify when the stones cost a fraction of the old number.
Customization has grown alongside the demand. About 63% of younger buyers say they want bespoke or made-to-order pieces, and lab-grown stones, produced in set sizes on a schedule, fit that request well. The result is a category that behaves more like fashion and less like an heirloom vault.
A person who would never spend five figures on mined diamond earrings will buy lab-grown studs for a few hundred dollars and wear them to work. The growth is in volume now, in the many small purchases that used to be unthinkable in real diamond.
The Resale Question
Lab-grown stumbles on resale. A natural diamond keeps some resale value, though less than buyers tend to assume. A lab-grown stone keeps almost none, because next year’s version will be larger and cheaper. For a buyer treating a ring as an investment, that matters.
For a buyer treating it as something to wear and enjoy, it matters very little. The price that makes lab-grown attractive going in is the same price that erases its resale on the way out. Knowing which kind of buyer you are settles most of the debate before it starts.
Buying Into Lab Grown
The direction is set, and the stakes for a buyer are simple. Lab-grown has won on price and on access, and it will keep taking share of both engagement and fashion jewelry as the gap widens. What a buyer gives up is resale and a certain scarcity-based prestige, the conspicuous consumption a rare mined stone once signaled.
What a buyer gets is a larger stone with a lighter conscience for a fraction of the historical cost, and the freedom to wear diamonds in places that used to be off-limits. Anyone buying now is following a move that already finished, so the gamble is gone. The only open question is how large a stone, and in how many pieces, a person actually wants to own.
