What Are the 3 Types of Mattresses?

Mattresses are essential parts of our daily lives. This is the thing we use to lie down and rest and have a good night’s sleep. Decades ago, buying mattresses was pretty straightforward.

All you need to do is to visit your local mattress shop and choose from their limited selection by feeling them with your hand or sitting on them.

However, the mattress industry has changed drastically since then. These days, you’ll find a wide range of beds, which could be difficult to decide what to buy. Some people want to buy a Silentnight mattress, while others look for other makes and models.

When looking for a mattress, you need to understand the three key types: innerspring, foam, and hybrid mattresses. In this article, we’ll discuss their differences.

Innerspring

Innerspring is the most well-known type for homeowners. They have been around since the old days, and most of us have probably grown up sleeping on one.

A typical variation has few layers. In most cases, you’ll find spring coils layered with foam on top. However, some still have an additional layer on top for better comfort.

Many people prefer this type of mattress because of its strong edge support that gives a responsive feeling. Whenever you lie down, the coils push you back, which gives the bounciness.

Since it offers excellent edge support, you won’t feel your bed sinking whenever you get closer to the bed’s edge while sleeping. This means you will sleep soundly despite changing positions.

However, this mattress has drawbacks. The high responsiveness can become a disadvantage, especially when sleeping with a partner. The motion will be transferred, and that could wake them up in their sleep.

You also need to remember that this mattress isn’t very reliable when providing less pressure relief than other types, especially when you’re suffering from back pain. It’s not great for contouring the shape of your body.

Foam

Foam mattresses have been one of the top choices of many people, even though they were just released decades ago. They have become more affordable, and you’ll see them almost anywhere. One thing to keep in mind is that not all of them are the same.

The most typical build of this type has multiple layers of foam, giving more density to its entire structure. Generally, it includes three layers; top, core, and base foams.

One of its best features is the superior motion isolation. You don’t need to worry about your partner waking up because the foam will absorb it all. This means even though you move a lot while asleep, no disturbance will happen.

It also provides pressure relief better than other types. It contours your body to help you relieve pressure in your body. Your weight will generally be spread through the mattress, giving you a very comfortable feeling.

Similar to innerspring, foams have drawbacks. They are the least responsive. It could be more challenging for you to move around or get in and out of bed, especially for people with limited mobility.

Another thing to take note of is that it may not be the best when it comes to edge support. When you get near the edge of your bed, you’ll feel its sinking, which can be disturbing for some.

A minor issue is that foam mattresses trap heat, making sleepers feel hot and uncomfortable. The good thing is that many companies have added cooling gel layers, but there are still some.

Hybrid

This type of mattress is the newest addition. This type usually has pocketed coils between two layers of foam; a rigid base and a comfortable top foam. They are similar to innerspring as they have coils, but these coils are wrapped individually in fabric.

The design of this type is to adjust the good and bad points of both innerspring and foams. The advantages may not be as superb, but the cons aren’t bad.

For instance, it offers better pressure relief as it helps relieve pressure points. It also has motion isolation that contours the body and keeps your partner asleep when you change positions.

It’s also more responsive than foam as it offers more bounciness; yet, it’s not as responsive as innerspring and has less motion isolation than foam.

Wrap up

Now that we’ve discussed the three types of mattresses, it’ll be slightly more manageable for you to choose which is good for your lifestyle. Innerspring is probably your best choice if you’re looking for more responsiveness.

On the other hand, foam is better if you’re searching for one that offers motion isolation. However, if you prefer a balanced one, a hybrid is probably your best choice if you prefer a balanced one.

Make sure to try them before buying to ensure that you’re getting the best comfort for your body. Once you’ve bought the mattress that you want, you’ll be able to sleep soundly, giving you more energy for the next day.
