7 Mario Badescu Drying Lotion Dupes

As someone who has battled with skin issues like acne and dry patches for most of my adult life, I totally get the struggle of finding the right products to help with these problems. Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion is a very good acne treatment product that I’ve been using for years. However, let’s chat about some fantastic Mario Badescu Drying Lotion dupes and alternatives that I’ve personally tried and tested.

The Lowdown on Mario Badescu’s Cult-Favorite

In case you’re not familiar, Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion is an acne spot treatment that’s been a skincare staple since the ’60s. Recently, it made a splash again, thanks to Kylie Jenner’s skincare routine reveal.

It’s an overnight spot treatment that you dab on to a blemish and leave it on while you sleep. Just plunge a cotton swab through the clear liquid to the pink sediment at the bottom of the bottle (you mustn’t shake it first!) to pick up all the active ingredients in one go. The formula works to shrink the size of spots, dry them out and also reduce redness so they don’t look as obvious.

In terms of ingredients, this iconic formulation is fortified with:

  • Isopropyl Alcohol: Known for its astringent properties, it helps in cleansing and disinfecting the affected area.
  • Calamine: Renowned for its soothing effect, it aids in reducing redness and irritation.
  • Sulfur: With its natural antibacterial properties, sulfur contributes to the acne-fighting prowess of the lotion.
  • Salicylic Acid: A beta-hydroxy acid, it exfoliates and unclogs pores, preventing future breakouts.
  • Zinc Oxide: This mineral provides a protective barrier, promoting skin healing and reducing inflammation.
  • Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891): Serving as a physical sunscreen, it adds an extra layer of defense against harmful UV rays.

Each of these ingredients plays a crucial role in the overall potency of the Drying Lotion, making it a trusted ally for those of us seeking a reliable and effective solution for acne. For example, this study demonstrates how effective salicylic is at controlling acne, and this study details how zinc is beneficial as an acne treatment.

It is really good, and a raved-about spot treatment for a reason because it does improve the look of blemishes overnight and help them to heal faster. I use it on cystic acne which I’ve had issues with for years, plus on regular pimples and pore blockages.

Priced at $17, it’s not a bank-breaker, but why not explore more affordable options? Plus, there are ethical considerations that might make you raise an eyebrow.

Whether it’s the price tag, concerns about the main ingredients, or you just want to explore something new, I’ve got you covered with some great alternatives from my skin care collection that are all a great dupe for this classic spot-fighting treatment.

My Mario Badescu Dupe Journey

Here’s a list of dupes for this Mario Badescu product that will give you the same or very similar results. These dupes are excellent alternatives that won’t burn a hole in your bank account, and are my top picks to replace the actual Drying Lotion OG from Mario Badescu.

4. Derma E Sulfur Spot Treatment with Tea Tree Oil $16

This is such a good dupe that actually goes above and beyond Mario Badescu’s cult-favorite acne spot treatment with some additional active ingredients.

Both formulations include common acne-fighting ingredients such as Isopropyl Alcohol, Calamine, Camphor, Glycerin, Salicylic Acid, and Zinc Oxide.

However, this treatment from Derma E includes additional ingredients like Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera, Tea Tree Oil, Niacinamide, and various plant extracts. Niacinamide has been shown in this study to fade dark spots and scarring, so it’s a good thing to find in acne spot treatments.

6. Indie Lee Banish Solution $21

While this product is a little more expensive than Mario Badescu, I’ve included it in this list of dupes for a good reason.

Indie Lee are a clean beauty brand, and they source their ingredients ethically and sustainably where possible. It’s a really lovely, forward-thinking brand and their aesthetic is on point too.

Indie Lee Banish Solution is a skincare dupe that mimics the results of the original Drying Lotion from Mario Badescu.

With colloidal sulfur, zinc oxide, and salicylic acid, it’s a potent concoction for tackling blemishes without breaking the bank. Plus, the added camphor brings soothing relief to irritated spots.

7. Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment $28

Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment is a slightly pricier but highly acclaimed alternative to the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion.

Personally I have loved every Kate Somerville product I’ve tried, and their ExfoliKate treatment has a permanent position in my skincare routine. EradiKate is a next-level spot treatment to tackle really nasty spots.

The ingredients, featuring zinc oxide, sulfur, salicylic acid, and camphor, closely match the cult-favorite.

This powerful lotion, adorned with the signature pink sediment, stops acne in its tracks. A little product goes a long way, making it a worthwhile investment that lasts.

If the Drying Lotion is one of your favorite products to help with blemishes but you either can’t or won’t bring yourself to purchase it, any of these Mario Badescu Drying Lotion dupes are a great alternative.

They all work in exactly the same way so fit in to your skincare routine just as easily.

Whichever Mario Badescu Drying Lotion dupe you choose, you will end up with clearer skin and brighter skin after using any of these overnight. However, my top recommendation is Derma E Sulfur Spot Treatment with Tea Tree Oil because, as well as being an efficient acne treatment, the addition of fruit extracts and niacinamide means you’re getting extra skincare benefits too.

FAQs

What does Mario Badescu Drying Lotion do?

Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion is intended to dry out blemishes on the surface of the skin, reduce redness, draw out impurities and unclog pores.
It is applied directly on to the skin and left for several hours or overnight so it can get to work on any annoying spots you may have.
You can also use it on those painful cystic acne spots to help reduce the swelling and take out the redness.

How do you use Mario Badescu Drying Lotion?

The key is not to shake the bottle! You are meant to just dip a cotton bud into the lotion and pick up some of the pink sediment at the bottom.
Then you dab this on to the blemish where it will dry out and get to work.

Is Mario Badescu Drying Lotion just calamine lotion?

While calamine lotion is one of the key ingredients of the Drying Lotion, it has other active ingredients which work alongside the calamine.

I gave the fourth raw beauty treatment a go and both hubby and I noticed a huge difference in our skin! My face around my nose cleared up a bit and that never happens. Great suggestion!
