Not too long ago, Modibodi products and period pants in general were a new concept to me.
However since using them for a long while now, I decided a Modibodi review was on the cards.
You may well have heard about these ingenious pants which aim to make sanitary towels and tampons a thing of the past.
The idea is that you wear these just like your regular undies but that they also absorb period flow at the same time.
This helps to reduce the scourge of disposable single use period products on the planet.
If you’re looking into using reusable period products then Modibodi pants might be just what you need.
And if you’re thinking of trying Modibodi underwear yourself, I hope this Modibodi review helps you make your decision.
An honest Modibodi review
Scroll down to read a Modibodi review of these period panties and decide if they’re right for you to use at that time of the month.
What is Modibodi?
Modibodi is a company which makes period underwear.
That is, underwear designed to be worn during your period and which can replace traditional period products like tampons and pads.
The Modibodi concept was initially imagined in 2011 by Australian entrepreneur Kristy who had not long had her second child.
After being plagued by the usually unmentionable bladder leakage that many mums suffer from, Kristy decided to design something that would help her and millions of other women.
Over the next few years she designed, developed and scientifically proved her patented Modifier Technology leak-proof undies.
From this starting point the Modibodi collection grew and the Australian company has gone from strength to strength.
Modibodi period pants are not the only thing they produce either.
They now make tops, singlets, pants and swimwear that all come in a range of styles.
There are products for men, teens, babies and pregnant women.
Like any item of clothing, the products are all reusable.
This Modibodi review is specifically about their period underwear.
How does Modibodi work?
Period pants are designed to be worn during your period and can be used without your usual period products, such as a menstrual cup or tampon.
The patented Modifier Technology which Modibodi founder Kristy designed is built into the underwear.
It is only 3mm thick yet despite this, it tailors to the different needs of different women.
While keeping the same thickness, you can buy different absorbencies depending on how heavy your period is.
The top layer is moisture wicking and antibacterial, and immediately draws moisture away into the middle layer.
This is the layer that absorbs any fluid and keeps it locked away.
The bottom layer is for extra waterproof protection so you can feel confident nothing will escape. It’s really so clever!
They have high absorbency which means you are kept clean and dry with just a single pair of pants on.
You can wear these pants during your period or just everyday, which is especially useful if you have any issues with incontinence as they work with pee as well.
How do you wash Modibodi?
To clean a pair of Modibodi period pants, all you need to do is rinse them in cold water until the water runs clear.
You can put them on a cold wash in the washing machine later on.
Then just hang them up to dry and wear them again.
How long do Modibodi undies last?
You might be shocked to learn (as I was) that it takes 500 years to breakdown one sanitary pad in landfills.
Also, 2 billion tampons are flushed down the loo each year in the UK.
Modibodi uses natural materials like bamboo and merino wool with new antibacterial fabrics to create their products.
If you take care of them as directed by washing in cold water only, each garment can last up to two years.
That’s a lot less disposable period products going into landfill in that time.
The brand also supports various charities including those associated with ending period poverty, which is something almost unfathomable to many of us yet a very real issue for so many women.
My Modibodi review
This particular style is the Sensual Hi-Waist Bikini from Modibodi and is the design I have been using.
At first glance you would not know these are ‘period pants’ as they really do look like a very pretty pair of regular pants.
They are super soft and comfortable, thanks to the bamboo.
I love the high waist aspect, which I find much more comfortable to wear. The lace is also super pretty.
When you pick them up you can feel a little bit of extra weight to them.
This is the inbuilt triple layered protection that sits where the gusset area is.
But the pad area is as thin as Modibodi state and so they are comfortable to wear.
When wearing them, they don’t feel any different to an ordinary pair of pants and are as comfortable as normal underwear.
Does Modibodi leak?
Providing you get your level of protection right for your flow you can wear these alone during your period.
It seems a little strange at first but they really do work at keeping you dry and fresh.
It can initially be very daunting to go without sanitary pads or tampons during your period.
The first time you wear these, you do feel as if you should be wearing some extra protection too and it can feel really out of your comfort zone.
I have some recommendations below for how to deal with this transition into wearing period briefs.
Can you wear Modibodi without a pad?
You can supplement with period products if you wish, as you will know your own body more than anyone.
However Modibodi are designed to be worn without the addition of disposable pads or any other sanitary products.

To get the right product for your own needs, Modibodi do provide a detailed guide to choosing the right product for you as well.
Do period undies replace tampons?
Modibodi period underwear is designed to replace tampons as well as pads and other disposable menstrual products.
This means it’s completely normal and expected that you wear these pants on their own, even on your heaviest days.
Modibodi review recommendations
The absorbent padding in Modibodi panties does provide you with leak-proof protection.
However, to get the best results it’s recommended that you transition into period pants.
I recommend trying out Modibodi pants on your lighter days first.
On the Modibodi website you can pick a pair of pants based on absorbency.
There’s actually a quiz you can take to guide you in the right direction.
The absorbency levels range from super light to heavy absorbency.
There are also options for wearing overnight which is one of the best period hacks for sleeping, and if you have other concerns like bladder leaks too.
The ideal solution is to have a pair of period pants for each day of your period, tailored to your specific flow on that day.
This can be a little hard to manage of course if you don’t have regular periods that are easy to predict.
I suggest getting your first pair to use on lighter days until you feel confident going without disposable period products.
You can of course also wear them on heavier days too and perhaps supplement with a pad or tampon at the same time until you feel confident enough to go without.
The main reasons I recommend this are that Modibodi and other period underwear brands are not the cheapest things around.
In the long run they can replace disposable products and actually save you money as well as benefit the environment.
However before purchasing too many pairs at once I recommend easing in to using them so you can get used to the idea, and make sure you are happy wearing this kind of underwear.
You can also experiment a little with the styles as there are so many to choose from.
If you’re a swimmer you might then feel confident enough to graduate to using their period swimwear too.
The different styles of Modibodi pants
This Modibodi review is centred around the Sensual Hi-Waist Bikini but there are lots of other designs in the range too.
For example, boy shorts, full briefs, seamfree, classic bikini cut, boyleg and even thongs.
Incredibly you can also buy sportswear like shorts and leggings, as the Modibodi technology is not just about periods.

The technology absorbs moisture so if you work out a lot then they are ideal for absorbing sweat.
You can buy swimsuits and bikinis, as well as maternity pants and vest tops which absorb milk from leaking breasts.
There is also a vegan range if you don’t wish to wear products containing wool.
In addition to this there are products specifically for teenagers, and reusable nappies for babies which use the same technology to absorb liquids.
There’s also a range for men (because let’s face it, incontinence isn’t just experienced by women).
Modibodi review wrap up
Modibodi are planet friendly period products that really do work well.
I really love mine and love how comfy they are and that they really work.
I don’t feel like I am wearing anything other than regular underwear.
It’s also a great feeling to know that you’re not purchasing tampons or pads anymore that will go directly into landfill once used.
They are a great product and worth the investment in my opinion.
The downside is that they are not the cheapest underwear you can buy, but you will be able to get years of wear out of them if you look after them as Modibodi instruct.
If you are prepared to make the investment you will be glad you did.
We all have different menstrual cycles so what works for one woman might not work for another.
Therefore as part of this Modibodi review I suggest trying out one or two pairs for a long time to see if you like them.
There’s a wide range of colours and styles and you might find these are an absolute game-changer for you.

I have 2 pairs of modibodi pants and I absolutely love them. They are not cheap but the quality is incredible and worth the price
I’ve read really good reviews about these. Worth the price I think.
These sound great. If only something like this had been around when I was younger.
Would love to try these to see if they do actually work.
I have wanted a pair of these for ages because it would be great to feel “normal” at THAT time of the month and to not have to worry or feel uncomfortable
