How to plan the ultimate getaway

Last updated: June 23, 2026

A great getaway often starts long before you pack your suitcase. You might find yourself scrolling through destinations after a busy day or imagining a break that feels completely different from your routine. The best trips usually come from decisions that feel simple but intentional, where you match your time away to what you actually need rather than what looks appealing on a screen.

When you take a bit of time to shape the experience in advance, you give yourself a better chance of arriving somewhere that feels right from the moment you get there.

Decide what you want from your time away

Every great holiday starts when you understand what you want from it. You might feel worn out from work and want complete rest, or you might look for new experiences that pull you out of your routine.

You can make this clearer by thinking about how you spend your time at home. If your days feel busy and structured, you may benefit from slower surroundings. If life already feels repetitive, you may prefer a trip that brings variety and movement.

Choose a destination that matches your interests

Your destination shapes the rhythm of your entire getaway, so it helps to think about what you enjoy day to day. A city break can fill your time with restaurants and local culture, or you can experience a coastal escape that slows everything down and gives you space to switch off.

You can narrow your options by focusing on what you actually want to do rather than just where you want to go. If food matters to you, look for places known for local dining. If you prefer nature, choose locations with easy access to walking routes or beaches. This approach helps you avoid spending your trip trying to “make” a destination work.

Find accommodation that suits your travel style

Where you stay can shape how relaxed or structured your trip feels. Boutique hotels often give you a more personal base, while larger resorts can simplify your stay by handling more of the planning for you. Many travellers also choose all-inclusive holidays because they reduce the need to think about meals, budgeting or daily logistics once you arrive.

You can refine your choice by thinking about how much independence you want. If you enjoy exploring freely, a central hotel may suit you better. If you prefer a simpler routine, a resort-style stay can remove small daily decisions that often add up while travelling.

Balance exploration with time to unwind

It is easy to overfill your itinerary when you arrive somewhere new, especially if you want to make the most of your time. However, constant activity can leave you feeling more drained than refreshed.

You get more from your trip when you leave space between plans. A slow morning before heading out or an unplanned afternoon can help you notice places you might otherwise rush past. When you balance activity with downtime, you return home with a clearer sense that you have actually experienced your destination, rather than just moved through it.
