Mainland Europe is an especially special continental swathe, home to myriad beautiful countries with each their own incredible histories, architectures, cultural traditions and natural wonders. It’s hard not to be entranced by central-European destinations like Czechia when you travel – and harder still for film location scouts to ignore the possibilities of its charming medieval cities.
Prague is Czechia’s capital, and a veritable dream for film lovers. This is a city where Hollywood has met Gothic charm, and made firm friends with it. You’re hard-pressed not to see Prague on the silver screen in some form or another, whether it’s the world of Mozart or the world of Spider-Man. Prague’s streets have starred in countless productions, a small handful of which I present to you today. If you’re looking for inspiration on where to go for your next Prague city break, you’ll certainly find some here, in this mini-tour through the city’s most iconic cinema spots.
1. Amadeus (1984)
This quintessential piece of 1980s period cinema owes a great deal to Prague – particularly, to the Estates Theatre, where the vast majority of the film’s key opera scenes were filmed. The theatre is a stunning stand-in for Vienna, and Amadeus itself a stunningly-realised story of jealousy and acceptance. Drop in here to feel that genius majesty at work!
2. Mission: Impossible (1996)
Tom Cruise’s first-ever outing as Ethan Hunt was kicked off, in true turncoat-espionage style, in Prague. The Charles Bridge was central to Jon Voight’s double-cross, and the Old Town Square famously flooded with water to film Ethan’s explosive escape from the aquarium restaurant. Pull up your trenchcoat collar and walk imperiously through the Old Town on a dark, clear night; you’ll love it.
3. Casino Royale (2006)
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig’s first outing as Bond in Casino Royale saw him trot the globe in pursuit of the enigmatic Le Chiffre, and his shadowy masters – or did it? While the film shows Bond in Miami, Venice and good old London, the vast majority of these scenes were actually filmed in Prague. Miami airport was the Ministry of Transport; Danube House was an office; and the House of Commons was actually the Strahov Monastery Library.
4. The Bourne Identity (2002)
Bond isn’t the only spy to have visited Prague in the stead of other global-trotty locations. Jason Bourne’s been at it too, with his early Zurich scenes in The Bourne Identity having actually been filmed on the streets of Prague.
5. Spider Man: Far From Home (2019)
Last but certainly not least, everyone’s favourite web-slinging smartmouth also found himself in the stunning streets of Prague for the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Charles Bridge and Prague’s squares appeared prominently, the Bridge being a key point in the film’s narrative.
