Reasons Self Care Should Be A Priority

Share this post:

Self care is often something people fail to prioritise in their lives. It’s usually because there’s so much else to do, other responsibilities that seem more important. Maybe you wish you had more time to take better care of yourself. Or believe that if you felt less stressed it would be easier to find the enthusiasm. Perhaps you find yourself thinking that if only you didn’t feel so tired all the time you’d have the energy to do more about taking care of yourself.

The problem here is that you’re putting the cart very much before the horse because the reason you’re struggling with fatigue, chronic stress, and little spare time is probably related to the lack of self care you’re giving yourself. Until you realise that looking after your health and wellbeing is the foundation upon which everything else rests, you’ll never overcome the problems affecting your life.

Feeling tired is a common complaint. If you’ve been working hard or exerting yourself physically, it’s perfectly reasonable to feel worn out at the end of the day. Feeling tired all the time isn’t normal though. The roots are almost certainly buried in a lack of self care.

Doing too much, getting overstressed, not relaxing and taking time for yourself, not getting enough exercise and fresh air, eating a poor diet, even mild dehydration from not drinking enough water each day can lead to chronic fatigue.

Taking time to address these negative influences will be time well spent. If you still feel tired, get yourself along to the doctor to see if you have a health issue. The early stages of diabetes, thyroid problems, other hormone imbalances and nutritional deficiencies can all cause fatigue, and in many cases are easily treatable.

Another common self care issue is using artificial support systems that do you far more harm than good. These include tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. If you have a problem with dependence on any kind of psychological crutch you need to get professional help. This will free you from your substance abuse prison.

Talk to your doctor in the first instance, and if you’re able to, enrol in one of the reputable drug treatment programs that are available. You could also join a support group. You’ll be able to talk to people in a similar situation and get the help you need.

If you start taking better care of yourself, you’ll begin to feel the benefits. You health will improve and your stress levels start to reduce. Over time you’ll find you have more energy and more enthusiasm. You are more able to deal with what life throws at you.

The bottom line is that unless you take care of yourself, you won’t be able to fulfil your obligations to anyone else. Your family, friends, and employer will be far worse off. Sacrificing the time caring for your well-being so that you aren’t letting anyone down is futile. It doesn’t help you or your loved ones. Make the right choice and ensure that self care becomes a priority. You’ll live a far happier and more rewarding life.
