The Rise of Slow Travel and How to Make the Most of It

Last updated: August 7, 2026

Modern travellers are moving away from packed itineraries and rushing between attractions. Instead, slow travel encourages people to spend more time in one place, connect with local culture, and enjoy a more meaningful travel experience. Rather than ticking off as many sights as possible, this approach favours depth over tickbox exercises, and it’s reshaping how many of us choose to holiday.

Focus on Quality Over Quantity

Rather than trying to see as much as possible, slow travel is about choosing fewer destinations and exploring them in greater depth. This might mean spending a full week in a single town instead of racing through three countries in the same timeframe, giving yourself the chance to actually settle into a place rather than experiencing it as a blur of landmarks.

Taking this approach often leads to memorable experiences and a stronger connection with a place, since the small, unplanned moments tend to stand out far more than a rushed list of ticked-off sights.

Choose Accommodation That Enhances the Experience

Where you stay can shape your entire trip. Independent hotels, countryside retreats, and locally run properties often provide a more authentic sense of place and encourage travellers to settle into the destination rather than simply pass through it.

Staying somewhere with genuine character, rather than a generic chain hotel, tends to add its own layer to the trip, whether that’s through more authentic local hosts or a stronger sense of connection to the surrounding area.

Travel with the Seasons

Slow travellers often embrace destinations at different times of year instead of only during peak season. Visiting somewhere in its quieter months can completely change how a place feels, often revealing a side that’s easy to miss when it’s packed with summer crowds.

Many people now opt for Lake District Christmas breaks to enjoy festive events, winter landscapes, and a more relaxed pace that perfectly complements the slow travel mindset. Frost-covered fells and quiet lakeside walks offer a very different experience from the region’s busier summer months, and one that feels particularly suited to slowing down.

Leave Room for Spontaneity

One of the best perks of slow travel is the freedom to adapt your plans. Spending longer in one location allows you to discover hidden cafés, scenic walking routes, and local recommendations that might otherwise be missed entirely on a tighter schedule.

Leaving gaps in your itinerary (rather than filling every hour) gives you the flexibility to follow a passing recommendation or simply wander somewhere unplanned.

Prioritise Rest and Well-being

Travel doesn’t have to be exhausting to be rewarding. Building time into your itinerary for relaxation, whether that’s enjoying a leisurely breakfast, visiting a spa, or simply taking in the scenery, can make a trip feel far more restorative and enjoyable.

This shift in pace often makes the difference between coming home in need of another holiday and returning genuinely refreshed.
