Christmas isn’t Christmas without a lovely shopping trip and a nice lunch in the middle of it. On a recent day out in London, my friend and I chose to seek out the Weighhouse Street Deli by Deliciously Ella. We’re both fans of her books and her blog, and being in London was the perfect opportunity to visit one of the three delis. We picked the Weighhouse Street Deli because it’s the biggest one so we thought we’d find it easier to get a seat. It’s also situated perfectly near to Oxford Street and Regent Street so great for a lunchtime bite if you’re in the capital doing some shopping.
If you’re not familiar with the phenomenon that is Deliciously Ella, it all started with a blog set up by Ella Woodward. Exploring diet and lifestyle changes while chronically ill, Ella set up a blog to share her plant based recipes with friends and family. Little did she know, the blog exploded and grew so popular she’s since launched several recipe books and now three delis in London. Not to mention a range of cereals and snacks. I for one am a huge fan of her recipes. Everything (absolutely everything, I swear) of hers that I have made has been delicious. Particular favourites of mine are the Miso & Sesame Brown Rice Bowl, Warm Winter Salad (with aubergine and sun dried tomatoes), and the Chickpea, Quinoa & Turmeric Curry. All the recipes I’ve tried have so much flavour! You can tell they are ‘healthy’ and not packed with processed foods or junks, but they don’t skimp on taste or colour and are so filling and satisfying.
I couldn’t wait to try out the food in Ella’s deli.
The Weighhouse Street Deli is indeed a deli, so you queue up to order your food and then take it to your table. It’s simply decorated, with bare wooden tables and leafy plants.
There is a basement area with lots of seating, but I recommend sitting upstairs if you can for the natural lighting and the chance to watch the world go by through the large windows.
The most important part, of course, is the real reason you’re there: the food.
Fresh meal choices are clearly set out on the signs. You can choose a meal which is put together for you already or, like most delis, choose from a variety of options to make up your own salad.
I went for the nut roast option, which came with onion gravy, cinnamon sweet potatoes, and hazelnut and cranberry Brussels sprouts. In the comforting fashion that is representative of Deliciously Ella, this comes in a bowl.
My friend opted for a Thai curry and a selection of salads on the side. We both just had water, but you can also buy juices and smoothies.
My meal including a bottle of water came to £10 exactly. I think that’s extremely reasonable for a large lunch in the centre of London.
The food was just delicious! I think it’s probably the best nut roast I’ve ever had. The sweet potato side was fantastic with the onion gravy. The best part? The Brussels sprouts. I am a huge fan of them anyway but these were just incredible with hazelnut and cranberry. The only thing that was slightly perplexing was that the whole meal was cold. I’m not sure if it was intentional (I assume it is). Although it was unusual, it didn’t detract from the taste. My friend also really enjoyed her meal, saying it was also incredibly tasty. Her Thai curry was warm.
You can also buy some desserts and other snacks if you wish.
We didn’t actually need anything else as the meal itself was so filling.
Overall I loved the experience and the food. It was great to finally visit one of Ella’s delis myself and get to taste some of her other recipes. I do highly recommend it. Perfect if you’re looking for somewhere affordable, central, healthy and delicious to pop for a quick lunch while in London.
