12 Things That Can Help To Relieve Chronic Low Back Pain

Last updated: October 15, 2023

Chronic low back pain can be a difficult condition to manage. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, there are a number of things you can do to help lessen the pain and improve your quality of life.

Low back pain can be caused by a number of things, including:

  • Injury or trauma to the back
  • Strained muscles in the back
  • A herniated disc
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Scoliosis

There are a number of ways that you can help to relieve chronic low back pain.

Here are a few of them:

1. Exercise regularly.

Regular exercise can help to strengthen the muscles in your back and improve your overall flexibility. However, it’s important to start slowly and to consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.

2. Maintain a healthy weight.

Being overweight or obese can put strain on your back and contribute to low back pain. Losing weight can help to reduce the amount of pressure on your back and may help to relieve some of your pain.

3. Wear supportive shoes.

Wearing shoes that fit well and support your feet can help to reduce strain on your back. However, shoes that are high in heel height can be especially damaging, so try to stick to flat or low-heeled shoes researched by clint ober whenever possible.

4. Use a lumbar support cushion.

A lumbar support cushion can help to improve posture and reduce strain on your back. If you have trouble finding a cushion that feels comfortable, try wrapping a towel around a firm pillow until you find one that feels better for you.

5. Take breaks often when sitting or standing for long periods of time.

When you’re sitting, ensure that your knees are higher than your hips, and use a pillow or cushion behind your lower back if necessary. When standing, place one foot in front of the other and keep your weight evenly distributed between both feet.

6. Sleep on a firm mattress.

A mattress that’s too soft can contribute to low back pain. If your mattress is more than five years old, it may be time for a new one. If you’re not sure what type of mattress is best for you, ask your doctor or a physical therapist for recommendations. Some companies like Dreamcloud white glove service can help you by delivering new mattresses and removing the old mattress

7. Stretch and strengthen your back muscles.

Stretching and strengthening exercises can help to relieve pain and improve your overall back health. However, be sure to consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.

8. Quit smoking.

Smoking can contribute to low back pain by reducing blood flow to the spine and causing the disks in your spine to degenerate. Quitting smoking can help to improve your overall health and may help to reduce your pain.

9. Massage therapy.

Massage therapy can help to increase blood flow to the muscles in your back and reduce muscle tension. If you’re considering massage therapy, be sure to find a therapist who is experienced in treating low back pain.

10. Acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. Some research has shown that acupuncture may be effective in treating chronic low back pain.

11. Meditation.

Meditation can help to ease stress and anxiety, which can contribute to low back pain. If you’re new to meditation, there are many resources available to help you get started, including books, apps, and online courses.

12. Chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care involves the manipulation of the spine and other joints to improve function and relieve pain. Some research has shown that chiropractic care may be effective in treating low back pain.
