What to Wear to High Tea

Last updated: January 3, 2025

High tea is a truly elegant experience, perfect for catching up with friends, celebrating a special occasion, or simply treating yourself. But with the finger sandwiches, steaming cups of tea, and charming atmosphere comes the question: what should I wear? Fear not, fellow tea enthusiast. I’ve been to many high teas and afternoon teas and my guide will equip you with the knowledge to pick the perfect high tea outfit, ensuring you feel confident and stylish for your tea party.

General Rules for High Tea Attire

When it comes to high tea attire, the general rule of thumb falls somewhere between business casual and smart casual attire. This means steering clear of overly casual attire like ripped jeans, t-shirts, or sportswear. Instead, opt for polished and put-together pieces that reflect the refined nature of the event.

Colors and Prints

High tea or afternoon tea is a pretty and delicate event. I suggest floral prints, pastel shades or a single bright color. Black is not ideal for an afternoon tea outfit.

Dresses

A tea-length dress or a midi dress in a floral print or pastel color is a wonderful choice, offering a touch of elegance and femininity.

Maxi dresses can also work well, especially for summer months, but choose one with a flowy silhouette and avoid anything too casual. Wrap dresses are a great fashion choice for plus size women.

The beauty of high tea attire for women lies in its versatility. While dresses are a classic choice for a high tea dress code, they’re certainly not the only option. Here are some great options to consider:

Skirts and Tops

A midi skirt paired with a collared shirt or a sweater set is another great option.

Opt for light colors and neutral tones for a classic look, or explore bright colors and fun prints on long skirts to add personality. Keep the top neutral and a solid color.

Dress Pants

Don’t underestimate the power of dress pants. In fact I am not usually a dress girl so I love to wear nice pants and tops to high tea.

Pair them with a silk blouse or a button-down shirt  and you’ve got a stylish and sophisticated outfit perfect for any high tea party.

You can also wear one of these gorgeous culotte co-ord sets which come in pretty pastel colors.

Shoes

Opt for closed-toe shoes like low heels, nude heels, or kitten heels. If the weather permits, a pair of ballet flats can also be a good choice for a more casual look.

High heels can add a touch of elegance, but if you’re not comfortable walking in them for an extended period, go for kitten heels or ballet flats.

Jewelry

Keep your jewelry simple and elegant. Pearl earrings are a classic choice, or you can add a touch of personality with a pretty necklace like a Van Cleef dupe or a bracelet.

Don’t go overboard on the bling, even if it’s just a semi-formal event.

Hats

While hats are not typically worn indoors during a traditional afternoon tea, they can be a fun and stylish addition for a garden party or outdoor tea event, especially if it’s a more formal event. Opt for a fascinator or a wide-brimmed hat for a touch of vintage charm.

Themed events

Many tea parties, especially those for baby showers or bridal showers, have specific themes. Embrace the theme with your tea party attire.

Comfort First

While looking stylish is important, comfort is the most important thing. Choose an outfit that allows you to relax and enjoy yourself. Avoid anything too restrictive or uncomfortable, especially if you plan on indulging in the delicious tea sandwiches and cream tea!

Accessorize Wisely

Garden parties often have a more relaxed atmosphere. A strapless summer maxi dress with a flared hem can be a great choice for these outdoor events. A cardigan sweater can be a great way to add warmth and a touch of sophistication if it gets cold.

Consider the season when choosing your outfit. Lighter fabrics and pastel colors are great for spring and summer, while darker and more confident colors and heavier fabrics are more suitable for fall and winter.

High tea is a great opportunity to dress up and have fun with your fashion. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors, patterns, and textures to create a unique and stylish outfit. Most importantly, relax and enjoy yourself! High tea is all about savoring delicious treats, enjoying good company, and creating lasting memories.
