You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic or live in the mountains to be a hiker, as the popular activity is much more accessible in the US than you might think. But why do it in the first place?

In this article, we’ll share five reasons why you should give hiking a go in 2024:

  1. It gets you outdoors

It’s harder than ever to break away from the mundane activities of everyday life and spend some quality time in nature. Hiking allows you to do just that, whether you’re trekking over mountains, exploring forests or just strolling through fields.

Not only are some of the best views in the world only accessible by foot, but hiking also gives you access to all the best benefits of spending time in the great outdoors.

  1. It’s great exercise

Hiking is an easy way for you to engage in physical activity and improve your health. Doing cardio reduces your risk of all sorts of health issues, from diabetes and obesity to heart disease and cancer – and hiking is one of the most enjoyable ways to reap these health rewards.

While hiking trips are undeniably a great form of cardio, they have far less damage to your joints than other popular forms of exercise such as running. It’s also easier for beginners and kids to get the hang of, making good health accessible for all.

  1. It’s affordable

In addition to being great exercise, hiking can also be completely free! Whilst you’re just getting started, you don’t need to go on anywhere special to take part. There are so many hiking trails and US national parks you can access for free.

You also don’t need expensive equipment, as the only gear you need is a comfortable pair of shoes, some water and protection from the elements, depending on the time of year.

  1. It’s good for your mental health

Exercise is great for improving your mental health by itself, but this effect is only amplified when you exercise outdoors – which is exactly what you’re doing while hiking. This makes it incredibly effective at reducing stress, fending off depression and generally enhancing your mood. Whether you’re looking to pick yourself up after hard times or simply looking to feel even happier, taking up hiking is a great way to do it.

  1. It’s fun for the whole family

In today’s busy way of life, it can almost seem impossible to spend quality time with your loved ones. There always seems to be more pressing matters at hand, whether that’s work, school, chores or catching up with your favourite shows.

But hiking gives you a fantastic opportunity to spend time with your loved ones. It’s conducive to feelings of closeness, as you overcome challenges and create new experiences together.
