Epoxy Floor Coating Makes for Easy to Maintain and Durable Floors for Hospitals

Last updated: October 14, 2023

Hospitals require very high standards of safety and sanitation that can ensure the health and well-being of their patients and other visitors.

Hospitals have many parts right from clinics, laboratories, operating rooms, intensive care, and imaging rooms, besides administrative and other service units like cafeterias and others. All of these see very heavy traffic that can also see the use of wheelchairs, carts, hospital beds, and stretchers. This constant movement and the extensive square footage that hospitals have requires the use of a type of flooring that will make operations easier. The flooring also needs to be aesthetically pleasing, reduce noise, and aid in temperature control.

You can learn more about Epoxy resin here.

Epoxy floor coatings are the most commonly used flooring systems in hospitals as they can meet all the needs specified above. It is flooring that can be given added skid-resistance, which will make it safer and prevent slips and falls.  They are flooring systems that give the hospital a germ-free setting and increase the sterility that is so important in often disease filled environments. It is a flooring that can be used in common areas, patient rooms, operating theatres, bathrooms, and all other areas to give seamless and colourful floors.

Epoxy flooring is available in many colours and finishes and can be customised for a hospital so that it makes for pleasing environments, and helps to promote the efficiency of staff and the well-being of patients. They help in infection control and as they are impervious to water they make it easier for cleaning. They are stain-resistant and can help in reducing infections. The application of these coatings give wall to wall coverage and greatly reduces any seams or corners and thus makes it easier for decontamination activities. Epoxy has high durability and compressive strength, resists punctures, and requires very little maintenance other than easy cleaning. The decor can be enhanced with the proper choice of colours and finishes. It is a flooring that also resists strong cleaning solutions that are often used in hospitals to ensure germ-free environments.

Epoxy floor coatings can be easily installed on concrete floors or used to cover any other tiled surfaces. It consists of a two-part mixture of resins and hardeners that require proper blending before application. These coatings are rolled on in multiple layers and have a firm adhesion with concrete that prevents it from chipping or peeling. The flooring created is seamless and can easily resist moisture, scuffing, and other chemicals. This coating will never catch fire and is strong enough to withstand spills of all kinds, while it can easily withstand the rolling of stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs.

Applying epoxy coatings is fairly simple and as easy as painting a wall. Solid epoxy is the best for hospital floors and must be applied to a thickness of at least 250 mils. Floors need to be absolutely level and free of any cracks or chips, that must be repaired and cured before the epoxy is applied.

Epoxy coating on floors in hospitals makes for flooring that is easy to maintain just using a floor polisher machine and able to withstand the traffic that it is subjected to.
