How To Maintain A Leather Jacket

Last updated: October 15, 2023

Leather jackets have become a popular, stylish staple of a man’s wardrobe. Regardless of your individual style, there’s a leather jacket to suit you. However, your commitment to style doesn’t just end once you’ve purchased the jacket – you also need to ensure you maintain it too.

Here, you’ll discover everything you need to know to ensure your new leather jacket lasts the test of time.

how to clean leather

Do not wash in the washing machine

Although many leather jackets give washing instructions on the label, it’s best to avoid washing your leather jacket in the washing machine. Doing so can cause fading, as well as damage, if you accidentally wash it on the wrong setting.

There’s also the chance moisture could get into the pores of the jacket, causing the jacket to look as well as smell old.

Clever cleaning tips

There’s a few clever cleaning tips which can help you keep your jacket in excellent condition. Applying a leather protector for example, will help to protect the jacket against stains and moisture. Even the highest quality jackets from stores such as Belstaff, can become damaged if not taken care of properly.

Another great tip if the jacket does get stained, is to use talcum powder. It may be messy, but talcum powder can help to really absorb grease stains. There’s even a clever tip to help you eliminate ink stains – an artist’s eraser!

Store on a wide hanger in the wardrobe

How you store the jacket will make a huge difference to how long it lasts. Ideally, you’ll want to hang the jacket in a cool, dry wardrobe on a wide shoulder hanger. The wide hanger will prevent the jacket from losing its shape; especially in the shoulder area.

Ensure the jacket fits properly

Of course, another thing that’s going to ensure the shape of the jacket remains intact, is a well-fitting jacket. There’s a lot of different styles and shapes of leather jackets available. As well as ensuring you’re choosing one of a high quality, it’s also important to make sure you’re choosing one that fits well too.

These are just some of the best ways to ensure your leather jacket maintains its quality and appearance. It’s so important to take proper care of the jacket.

That’s weird it said you could wash it but it didn’t help it at all. Shame as they are not cheap either!
