Essential Supplies when Preparing for Your New Puppy

Last updated: October 2, 2024

When it comes to our pets, only the very best will do. There’s no feeling quite like seeing them snug, content, and happy in our homes and flourishing in a loving, caring environment.

Getting a puppy is a very exciting time; not only are they incredibly cute, but they also bring so much joy into our lives.

And whilst it’s very exciting, it’s also important to be fully prepared for your new family member.

Due to their high energy levels, excitable nature, the period before training, you might find them difficult to handle at times. But with the right equipment, incorporating a new canine friend into your life should be a lot easier to deal with.

Comfort is key

Make your new arrival feel really at home with plenty of places for them to snuggle and snooze.

During their first few months when they are not allowed around the whole house, consider purchasing a dog crate. Not only are these beneficial for training purposes, but they also keep your puppy safe and get them used to confined spaces, which is good for travelling.

Be sure to create lots of cosy corners around the house too. Get in some dog beds and cushions, line them with fuzzy throws and avoid placing them where there are drafts. You want your puppy to feel comfortable, warm, and welcome.

Grooming

After getting a dog, you’ll quickly realise that your house doesn’t stay clean for long. Especially at this time of year, you will most likely return from a walk with your dog covered in mud and dry leaves; they might have even splashed around in a muddy puddle.

That’s why it’s important to keep your puppy clean by having brushes, dog-friendly shampoo, and toothpaste to hand.

Be sure to research your dog’s hair type as not all of them can tolerate a lot of washing. Others, like poodles, might also require more brushing to keep their coat in good condition.

Training

Whether you do it yourself or hire professionals to take care of it, training your puppy is an essential part of their development.

It can be a demanding process that, if you decide to do it yourself, requires a lot of time. You might also feel discouraged at times.

To make the whole process a lot more positive for your puppy, incorporate reinforcement methods that keep your puppy agile and strong.

Treats are an absolute must-have, and you might also want to get even better results using clicker training.

Toys

Finally, are toys! The best things to keep your puppy engaged and playful, get in a whole range of toys, from balls to chew toys and food puzzles. This way, they can still indulge their playful side when you’re not there.

For maintaining your puppy’s long-term health, consider incorporating the best hip and joint supplement for dogs, as recommended by experts at Mighty Munch.
