The Top Six New University Student Life Hacks for Surviving Your First Year

Last updated: October 14, 2023

The transition from grade school to the university is tremendous. For many students, it is their first time away from home. You no longer have your parents waking you up in the morning and telling you it is time to get ready for school. It is your first taste of freedom and adulthood.

However, for many students, this newfound freedom can be intimidating. How will you succeed at a new school? How will you manage your personal and student life? Student life hacks such as hiring a custom essay writing company to help you with your History 101 paper can relieve you of a burden and give you more time to work on more pressing matters or socialize with friends.

Here are the top six new university student life hacks for surviving your first year.

  1. Be Early

There is nothing worse than leaving a bad first impression on your professors. When you arrive late to class, you will stand out from the other students in a negative way. Some university students report that being late to class has actually prevented them from entering or participating in class.

University professors may lock the doors or ask you to leave after class has officially begun. You should always be early for your classes. If you do not know where your classes are, be sure to locate each building and classroom before the first day of classes. You should also practice walking from one class to the next to time how long it takes you to get to each one.

You do not have your parents waking you up to get you on the bus or drive you to school. If you have a hard time waking up in the morning, you should consider setting multiple alarms or scheduling afternoon classes.

  1. Recognize Your Strengths and Weaknesses

You may have been at the top of your class in grade school, but now you are competing with the top class members of many grade schools all over the country.

You should take time over the summer before classes begin to consider your strengths and weaknesses. If you are an avid writer but a poor editor or vice versa, you can hire essay writing services to help you write and edit flawless essays. If you struggle with mathematics or science and are required to take an intro class for your degree, you can line up tutoring before the first class is in session.

  1. School First, Play Later

What do you do when your new friends are hosting a party, but you have a test in the morning? It may be tempting to prioritize socializing with your new friends over studying, but it is important to remember that your education is a foundational step to a successful career.

Poor exam results will significantly reduce your grade and your chances of landing a good career after graduating. There will always be another party or social event, but there may not be another opportunity to ace the exam.

  1. Seek Help from an Upperclassmen

It may be intimidating to ask upperclassmen for help. However, upperclassmen were once in your shoes and can help provide advice on how to succeed in your first year at the university.

They are a wonderful tool and support system. Upperclassmen can give you advice on how to write your papers, the inside scoop on different professors, and show you around campus so you know where you are going for your next class.

  1. Ask for Assistance

If you are struggling to survive at the university, you can use free resources offered by your school, such as counselling services.

Like you, many other new students may feel homesick, depressed, and/or anxious during the school year.

To: Universities not only offer mental health support but also provide a range of valuable services, including math tutoring and mentoring to assist students in their academic journey.
  1. Accept Constructive Criticism

It is not easy to accept constructive criticism. When you are used to excelling in all academic areas in grade school, it can be exceptionally frustrating when you are struggling to meet university expectations. Often, university professors leave tremendous feedback on graded assignments.

You should take this feedback as a useful tool to help you excel in your next academic endeavour. Professors want you to succeed, regardless of their teaching methods or tactics. When you accept constructive criticism, you continue to grow as a student and embody the mission of the school.
