The Beautiful Resort Of Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Share this post:

Just a couple of weeks ago I came back from my fifth visit to Costa Teguise, Lanzarote. I never thought I someone who returns to the same place twice, but Costa Teguise has changed that. We first started going after my mum bought a Timeshare, and Sean and I joined her for a week. We both fell in love with the place and now we try to go back every year. What I love about Costa Teguise is the atmosphere. I just find it one of the most relaxing resorts I’ve ever been to.

Although Lanzarote is a volcanic island, and therefore rocky and with relatively low flora, it is beautiful in a desolate kind of way. It has palm trees and flowers, and some very interesting wildlife, but it also has a lot of wide open spaces without much plant cover. The place just grows on you.

Costa Teguise is a resort on the eastern side of Lanzarote, a short distance (ten to fifteen minutes) from the airport at Arrecife. It’s a fairly quiet resort in relation to Puerto del Carmen, a bit further down the coast. I have only ever been in April or May, so can’t comment on high summer. But even at those times, Puerto del Carmen is extremely busy so if you’re looking for a quieter place to stay, try Costa Teguise.

There is something for everyone there, no matter what you want to do. If you like a very peaceful holiday relaxing in the sun, you can easily do that. If you like to be more active and get out and about, you can do that too. It’s a great place if you’re looking for holidays for teenagers as they will have plenty of things to do.

Things To Do When Staying In Costa Teguise

There are so many things to see and do in and around Costa Teguise. One of the great things about Lanzarote is how easy it is to get around. The roads are generally smooth and clear, there are numerous excursion tours to take, and you can also hire a car.

Here are some of my favourite things to do in Costa Teguise and in Lanzarote in general:

Walking: you can walk for miles in and around Costa Teguise. It has a beautiful long promenade along the coast, with various stops along the way for a drink or snack. The view of the sea is stunning, and there are no cars along that section so it’s very quiet. Along the way are outdoor gyms which many people use.

You can walk back from the seafront through the town and it’s also safe to go off the beaten track. Tucked in between buildings are stony paths to somewhere else and you can walk for miles throughout the unpopulated areas surrounding the resort.

Shopping: there is a large Sunday Market in the town of Teguise (around five miles away) which runs every week. There are tour buses that every excursion company runs to take you there and taxis are also cheap on the island. There are hundreds of stalls selling crafts, lava jewellery, food, and other souvenirs. Costa Teguise also has a fair few shops, ranging from the usual holiday tat to upmarket designer stores. Great things to buy in Lanzarote are perfumes, alcohol and aloe vera products. I have an aloe vera plant I brought back several years ago which is still going strong.

Jameos del Agua: one of my favourite places, Jameos del Agua is a series of lava caves which have been turned into the most stunning cultural attraction. Created by former mayor César Manrique (responsible for many of the most beautiful spots in Lanzarote), you’ll find a bar, cafe, pool, natural lake (with mini albino crabs) and theatre. It’s totally unique and extremely beautiful.

César Manrique Foundation: Manrique’s house is now a tourist attraction, and well worth a visit. He built it inside several volcanic ‘bubbles’, creating stunning interconnected rooms and gardens. You can wander around his house, and view his extensive collection of artwork on the walls and in the gardens.

Cycling & Quadricycling: You can hire almost any form of transport from the many hire centres in the town. Lanzarote itself is the site of many triathlons and ironman competitions, and you’ll see people training any of the disciplines all day long. Even if you’re not at that level, you can still hire bikes to explore the area or even a quadricycle so the whole family can cycle up and down the promenade. You can also hire segways and scooters.

Timanfaya National Park: no visit to Lanzarote would be complete without a visit to its famous volcanic park. It has spectacular views across volcanic craters, and at the peak of this dormant volcano you can see demonstrations of the incredible geothermals created by the volcano’s heat. In fact El Diablo, the restaurant on the peak with a panoramic view, uses this heat to cook its food.

Eating & Drinking: there are so many restaurants in Costa Teguise, and it’s easy to find almost every type of cuisine. In fact, when it comes to what to eat in Spain and the Canaries you’ll find there are lots of traditional and alternative cuisines available.

Some of my favourite restaurants are La Hacienda, The Lighthouse, La Bohemia, Bacchus, and Namaste. Make sure to try to Canarian Potatoes and mojo sauces.

For drinks, there is a square in the centre of the town where people congregate all day and night. There are several bars you can sit at and catch the last of the sun with a drink, Bar Chispas being one of my favourites. For a beachfront cocktail, try Surfwings.

Nightlife: if you love to watch bands and singers, then Costa Teguise is for you. There are many great acts performing in Costa Teguise, and you can see something different every night in its many bars and restaurants. There’s always a great atmosphere at these gigs. There are also (so I’m told!) nightclubs too.

Visiting Other Resorts: there are very good buses to the towns of Arrecife (great for shopping), Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Buses are reliable, very cheap and easy to use. You can spend the whole day or more in any of these towns with their hundreds of restaurants and shops.

My Tips When Visiting Costa Teguise

costa teguise

  • If you plan on walking a lot, take closed toe shoes as there are a lot of stones on the paths .
  • Perfume and alcohol are very cheap in Lanzarote. If you can fit them in your case, it’s much cheaper to buy them in the resorts than to wait until you get to the airport.
  • If hiring a car, bear in mind the strict rules of the Spanish Highway Code. They operate a zero tolerance policy, so don’t get caught out. Flip flops when driving are banned, and they have a much lower legal limit for alcohol than in the UK. There are other rules so be sure to take heed of them all.
  • Being close to the equator, the sun is much stronger in Lanzarote. Make sure to wear a high SPF at all times, even if it’s cloudy.
  • Lanzarote is fairly windy at times (the breeze is great when it’s ultra hot). Nights can sometimes be chilly as a result so I do recommend a few cardigans or long trousers for the evenings.
  • Supermarkets are very cheap in Lanzarote so it is very affordable to self-cater.
  • Like most of Europe, most people speak English but learning a few Spanish words will go a long way.

I’m planning to go back again this year in September, and can’t wait. Costa Teguise is such a lovely resort, with something for everyone. Maybe I’ll see you there!
